2007 Kaena Hapa Santa Ynez Valley
Hapa the Hawaiian word meaning part or fraction, part Hawaiian was chose for this high end cuvee of 60% Syrah, 30% Grenache, both from the Tierra Alta Vineyard and 10% Mourvedre from Camp Four Vineyard. Tierra Alta Vineyards sits on the eastern edge of Ballard Canyon with a steep south east orientation. The soils here are clay with high amounts of limestone providing great minerality and intensity in the fruit. The Grenache is located at the top of the vineyard at about 1200 feet above sea level and is planted to the Tablas clone of Grenache. The Syrah sits just below the Grenache and is chosen from block 5 planted to the Shiraz clone #1 and produced a deeply concentrated wine. Camp Four Vineyard located in the eastern end of the Santa Ynez Valley is perfectly situated for optimally ripening Mourvedre with its rocky clay soils. This was the first and only year that I was able to conferment the syrah and Grenache which I believe brought better cohesion to the blend. I was also able to
ferment the Mourvedre and Grenache together further complexing the wine. The wine spent 20 months in 2 year old Allier 300 liter French oak barrels before bottling in June of 2008.

2007 Kaena Grenache “Larner Vineyard” Santa Ynez Valley
Larner Vineyard is located on the western edge of the Ballard Canyon. This is a small family run vineyard with approximately 40 acres of grapes. The Grenache is planted on a south facing hillside at the top of the vineyard. The soil is very sandy, so there is great drainage and just the right amount of stress on the vines to keep the yields low. My particular section is planted with ENTAV clone 362 which is supposedly the lowest yielding of all Grenache clones. I love working with Grenache from this vineyard and I was once again awestruck by the color and intensity of the fruit. The fruit was fermented using native yeast and pressed off a little sweet straight to barrel to finish primary fermentation. The wine spent 20 months in 3 year old Allier French oak before bottling in June of 2009.

2007 Kaena Grenache “Tierra Alta Vineyard” Santa Ynez Valley
Tierra Alta Vineyards sits on the eastern edge of Ballard Canyon with a steep south east orientation. The soils here are clay with high amounts of limestone providing great minerality in the fruit. The Grenache is located at the top of the vineyard at about 1200 feet above sea level. This section is planted with the Tablas clone of Grenache and is well suited to the vineyard. The wine was fermented using native yeast with 35% whole-cluster combined with destemmed fruit for greater complexity in mouth and aroma. I used three year old French Allier barrels for aging. The wine spent almost two years in barrel before bottling in June of 2009.

2007 Kaena Hale Red Wine (65% Grenache 35% Syrah)
Hale the Hawaiian word for house or home is made for the everyday. For me right now I think that the Spanish are doing it better than anyone when it comes to creating wines that have great price to quality ratios and this is my take on the perfect everyday drinker. Great upfront fruit and balance are paired together with great density and length making it my house wine of choice. Many have told me that Hale is the best bang for the buck that they have had in a long time. Try it out and see for yourself.

2008 Grenache Rosé
I basically make this wine for myself and my wife Sally every year. I am a huge fan of Tavél rose and have styled this wine in that image. Bright fruit balanced by mouthwatering acidity and great texture. I’ve been making rose for a while now and can honestly say that this is the best one I have done to date. One bottle is never enough.
